Can Success be Simplified?

Success Simplified by Steven Covey, J.R. Atkins, Tony Alessandra & Patricia FrippIn the book Success Simplified by Insight Publishing, several authors, strive to cut through clutter and identify strategies and steps to help us all succeed. I took a look through the book and identified a few ideas and quotes worth sharing.

In chapter 2, Dr Stephen R Covey talks about how many organizations are using “the industrial model in an information age” meaning the J.R. Atkins & Stephen Covey wrote Success Simplifiedmachine was the main asset of the industrial era. “The new asset is intellectual and social capital – the qualities of people and the quality of the relationships they have with each other.” He goes on to say that “the industrial model does not work in an information age. It requires a focus on new wealth, not capital and materials.” Yet, think of how many of our analogies and structures stem from the industrial days? (p22).

In chapter 6, J.R. Atkins (me) provides information and strategies for leaders so they can make sense of social media and learn how it can be applied to their organization. Of the hundreds of social media tools and networks available, I point to The Big 5 of Social Media: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Blogging and Video. Google+ may succeed in becoming #6 but the jury is still out on that verdict. With one or more of the Big 5, an organization can share content, listen to customers, create a community, build relationships of trust and build business. “In a broad since, there are generally 3 ways a business can use social media: (1) Marketing (2) Customer Service (3) Employee/Partner Communication. “In addition to these, social media also helps you search engine optimization or SEO. (p92)

In chapter 9, Patricia Fripp discusses “How to Get Ahead and Stay There” by becoming a better speaker. At age 20 she arrived in America as a hair stylist and $500. After becoming very successful as a hair stylist in Hollywood, she began speaking and became an award winning, accomplished member of the National Speakers Association. Patricia says there is nothing that an executive and leaders should focus on more than being able to communicate their ideas and their passions. (p147)

In chapter 16, Dr Tony Alessandra talks about using the Platinum Rule: Do unto others as they would have you do unto them. In other words, treat people the way they would like to be treated. (Tony owns the trade mark on the Platinum rule). He is also big on assessments. Update about the Tweets Application on LinkedIn

I received this email from LinkedIn today and thought I’d share it for the benefit of all.

Social Media Trainer J.R. Atkins shares changes to LinkedIn and TwitterDear LinkedIn user,

We wanted to let you know about a change coming soon to the Tweets Application on LinkedIn.

1. First, we are not eliminating the ability to send updates between your Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. You can still go to your Settings page and choose to send either all tweets or only tweets with a #in hashtag to your LinkedIn status updates. It’s up to you. Again, tweets imported from Twitter into the LinkedIn network updates stream will not be affected.

If you haven’t yet joined your Twitter and LinkedIn accounts, here’s how you do it.

2. At the end of January, however, we will not be supporting the standalone Tweets Application on LinkedIn (see image), that displays tweets from everyone you follow on Twitter on your LinkedIn homepage. As of January 31st, this module will no longer be available.

Is your Marketing Approach like a Leaf Rake or a Leaf Blower?

Prospects can turn to so many sources for information about you, your company, and your products or services. A recent day of yard work prompted me to explain the shift in marketing to a colleague as being “more like using a leaf blower then a rake.”

The Leaf Rake Approach

Atkins recomends ACT for Contact or Customer Relationship Management Prior to the proliferation of on-line tools, I collected contact information from prospects such as their name, address, phone number and fax number and stored them on 3×5 cards. In the early 90’s I started using ACT, a Contact and Customer Relationship Management system, or CRM, to keep up with prospect information and to schedule phone calls, meetings, and direct mail campaigns. Armed with this information, I could mail, call, and fax prospects about my products and services. This shows the emphasis on collecting contact information, much like raking leaves into a pile.

The Leaf Blower Approach

Today, I take a different approach that is more like a leaf blower. As I meet prospective clients, I connect with them on-line via email and or social media. I have shifted from collecting and hoarding data, to giving and sharing data. In other words I blow information into the wind and wait for those who are interested to reach out to me.

Once a connection is made via LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, a blog or YouTube, the prospect get’s to choose if they would like to follow you and if so, they can choose their preferred method of communication. Some prospects will discard the information you share, others will collect it and save it for the future, and some will find if valuable and share it with others, while some will act on it by reaching our my email, social media or phone. The main idea is that the prospects who are interested in you and the content you publish will “follow you” and when they are ready to buy, they will reach out to you.

Yet, there is a key point with this approach. It requires the marketer to publish content that is interesting, valuable and giving in nature. This kind of content will be shared with others and your message will take on the viral affect where it gets passed around to others very rapidly.

When using the “leaf blower” methodology, your goal is to draw prospects to you by “blowing out the information” and letting those that are interested come to you.

You probably need both

In business, we need both approaches to market effectively. We should use the leaf blower approach to share good content through a website, email newsletter, LinkedIn, Facebook Fan Page, Twitter, a Blog and a YouTube Channel. Then, we can identify those prospects that have an interest in our content and target them with direct mail, email blast and direct selling content and methods.

By using both approaches we can continue to grow our business while allowing the prospect to connect with us in the way that works best for them. My hope for you is that you “rake in the money while blowing away the competition.”

Are you following, on Twitter, all of your LinkedIn connections?

Dallas Social Media J.R. Atkins uses TwitterSince LinkedIn and Twitter have an alliance or partnership, the two Social Media networks are well integrated. You might notice that many people on LinkedIn also have their Twitter user name listed on their profile. If you do not, go to LinkedIn, click on Profile, chose Edit Profile, and you will see Twitter between Websites and Public Profile. Click on edit and add your Twitter user name. Also, if you have not personalized your Public Profile you can do that here as well.

Now that you have your twitter account connected to your LinkedIn account, open another window, go to Twitter and sign in. Go to Settings, click on Find People, click on Find Friends, and click on LinkedIn. This will automatically go to LinkedIn and find all of the shared connections between the two applications labeled All connections on Twitter and give you a number of connections, for example (132).

Dallas Social Media Speaker J.R. Atkins uses LinkedInYou will see who you are already following on Twitter as well as those who you are not following. Click on the follow button to the right of each persons name to follow them on Twitter. You will need to go one by one, page by page, till you reach the end of the list. This makes for a good activity while watching TV.

Warning: Do not follow more than 999 new people per day or Twitter will lock down your account. If this ever happens to you go to Twitter Help, beg for forgiveness and wait a few days from them to reactivate your account.
